Board Game Resolutions

As board gamers, we are quite familiar with facts, figures, odds and statistics. Each decision we make while playing is a calculated risk and it’s up to us to be on top of ‘em. As such, we are the first to admit that there’s only the slimmest of chances that any New Year’s resolutions will stick. History has proved us right so far. So, what’s a board gamer to do if they’re still hoping to focus on self-improvement in 2024? Shorten the timetable within which the resolution must occur and follow us to the below ideas for quick and easy resolution ideas that should be accomplishable in record time.

Resolution: Higher Dice Rolls

Of all the resolutions you may make, the least likely to be achieved are those entirely out of your control. But this can be a good thing: Fail, and you can blame it on bad luck; win, and you can chalk it up to some manner of personal triumph. Dice have had that effect on players since the first game—we’re going to assume it was Tag—came to be. Great rolls make or break gameplay, so vow to roll higher in 2024 than you ever thought possible, like a natural 7 off a D6 or the square root of -1 off a D20. Within minutes of the clock striking midnight, you’ll take that first fated roll and see what 2024 has in store.

Resolution: Reduced Salt

If winning is everything, losing is everything bad. It may not have even been your fault—board gamers know they can try their best and still lose out to a random number generator. Practice taking the L in 2024 by throwing the first board game of the year and sitting in that sadness to reflect. Anything you could have done differently? Should have done differently? What’s so hard about being a winner, buddy? Will this misplaced anger ever end? (Likely will happen in 2025 when you again resolve to keep things less salty.)

Resolution: Become More Welcoming to Strangers

Next time you find yourself at a board game mixer or friend’s gaming party, take a minute to survey the landscape to see who else has been invited. They may have an interesting backstory or a job that pays a lot, requires little and is looking to hire right away. They’ll appreciate a bit of kindness, as many of these people may be coming into a situation in which they don’t know a single soul. So, greet them! Ask questions and pay compliments. Once the board game starts, you can take it all back and claim you tried.

Resolution: Run That Marathon You’ve Been Putting Off

This may be one of the most common resolutions among overachieving, under-praised individuals, and the best part is that it’s never too early to start training. As they say, the journey of 26 miles begins with a single step, so take that step and praise yourself for the Herculean effort it required. And, yes, moving walkways at airports do count—board gaming is nothing if not finding shortcuts to victory.
