The Best Christmas Board Games for Family Game Night 2026

You’ve opened the presents. Dinner is still a while away. Someone suggests getting one of the Christmas board games out.

Sounds easy enough, except there’s a good chance some people at the table haven’t played a board game in quite a while.

A May 2026 YouGov survey of 1,131 U.S. adults found that 28% play board games at least once a month, while 22% said they never do.

So when we looked for the best Christmas board games for family game night, we kept it simple: games that are easy to explain, take 40 minutes or less and work for more than one age. Five of our six picks fit the bill. The sixth is a puzzle mystery you can do at your own pace.

If you want to know which game fits the gap between presents and dinner, which one works with kids at the table, and when to order so it arrives before Christmas, we break down every pick below.

Quick Picks for Between Presents and Dinner

If you’ve got some time before Christmas dinner, you probably want a game that’s quick to learn and doesn’t take all evening. Nobody wants to explain a 20 page rulebook while the turkey is in the oven. These two are much easier to get going.

The first is Pack the Essentials

, a tile-drafting game for 1 to 4 players, ages 12 and up, and a game takes 20 to 30 minutes. You pack cats and other essentials into a suitcase over 12 rounds, and the randomized “To Do” list goals change what you’re aiming for each time, so a second game feels different from the first. And yes, apparently cats count as packing essentials. We’re not arguing with that.

The second is Puzzle Post Mystery, the cheapest pick here at $15 and the only one that isn’t a board game.

It works like an escape room in a box: one case with 7 puzzles, and solving them gives you a code for an online vault. It’s a one-time purchase and it can’t be replayed, so think of it as one evening, not a game for the shelf. If you’re filling stockings, it’s also the one that fits.

For the Whole Table, Kids Included

If the kids are playing too, you need something they can pick up quickly without the adults checking their phones five minutes later. Cities and Tangram City are both good options for that, depending on how old the kids are: Tangram City is for ages 8 and up, and Cities is for ages 10 and up.

Cities is a light city-building strategy game for 2 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, and it plays in 30 to 40 minutes. You draft projects and arrange them in your own play area over 8 rounds (4 in a 2-player game), so everyone ends up with a city of their own.

Tangram City takes 1 to 5 players, ages 8 and up, in 10 to 40 minutes, and everyone places tiles on their own board at the same time, so there’s very little waiting. It was designed by Uwe Rosenberg, one of the best-known designers in the hobby, and each round you score your largest rectangle.

If the youngest player is 8 or 9, start with Tangram City. Neither game is meant for children under 8. Tangram City is also the only board game on this list that takes 5 players.

A Calmer Game for a Full House

Not everyone wants Christmas dinner followed by an argument over who actually won. If you’d rather play something relaxed while everyone talks and catches up, Floriferous is the best fit here.

Floriferous is a garden game for 1 to 4 players, ages 14 and up, and it takes 20 to 30 minutes. Over 3 in-game days of 5 turns each, you take one step through the garden on your turn and pick up a flower or desire card, and our own product page calls it “one of the calmer titles in our lineup.”

The 14 and up rating makes it a better fit for teens and adults than for younger kids. It also has a solo mode, which gives one person a quiet game while everyone else watches the movie.

For the Family That Wants One Big Game All Night

If “one more game” at your house usually means another hour at the table, Kokopelli is a good choice. Each game takes 20 to 40 minutes, so there’s plenty of time for a Christmas rematch.

Kokopelli is a PREMIUM title at $49.99, for 2 to 4 players, ages 12 and up according to its publisher, and a game takes 20 to 40 minutes. Each player has a 36-card deck. On your turn you draw, start a ceremony or add a card to a ceremony in your play area, and finishing a ceremony earns a victory point tile.

Like all PREMIUM titles, it’s sold on its own and isn’t part of the monthly subscription.

Where to Get Them (and When to Order for Christmas Delivery)

All six picks were on the shop page in October 2026. Of those, Pack the Essentials, Cities, Tangram City and Floriferous are $33.99 each, and shipping on each game is a flat $6. You can see them all together in the UnboxBoardom shop.

Why a subscription fits the holidays better than one game

The shop carries some of the most popular games from past boxes, and that list changes over time. The subscription is the core of UnboxBoardom, and it takes the same Christmas question off your plate every month: what are we playing next?

You pick the game. On the 1st of each delivery month, an email lists 3 games with descriptions, and you have 5 days to choose one. Or choose Trust the Experts at sign-up and let the team pick.

You keep every game. It’s a purchase, not a rental, so nothing ships back if you cancel.

The price is per box. A box costs $29.99 to $33.99 depending on the plan, and shipping is the same flat $6.

You can leave anytime. With the pay-as-you-go plan you can cancel at anytime. Neither option has a cancellation fee.

A gift is easy to get right. The person who gets it picks the games, and the recipient is never charged once the gift term ends.

It gives something back. For every 10 new signups, UnboxBoardom donates a board game to a kids’ organization, and members earn Victory Points toward discounts and free boxes: 20 for joining and 10 for each month a subscription renews.

What if you can’t pick one game?

Then don’t guess. A gift card lets them pick for themselves, which is probably better than spending Christmas morning pretending you absolutely nailed their taste in board games.

In the National Retail Federation’s October 2026 survey of 8,094 adults, gift cards sat at the top of wish lists, with 47% of consumers saying they’d like one.

UnboxBoardom gift cards run from $10 to $100 and arrive as a digital code by email, and the recipient enters it at checkout. It also works when you don’t know which plan fits, because the person who gets it picks the plan and the games, so nobody has to guess. The gift guide explains how gift cards and gift subscriptions work.

When should you order for Christmas?

Earlier than you’d probably guess. Christmas shopping has a habit of feeling comfortably far away until suddenly it isn’t.

Games and puzzles was the fastest-growing toy category in 2025, up 30% across 12 markets, according to Circana data released by The Toy Association in January 2026.

The same NRF survey found that 43% of holiday shoppers planned to start before November, and 64% said they were likely to wait until Thanksgiving weekend to do most of their shopping. Both waves land right before the days you want a game to arrive, so order earlier than feels necessary.

A gift subscription follows a different calendar than those shopping waves. Sign up by the end of November and the recipient gets their first game in December, before Christmas. Sign up in December and they’ll know a subscription is on the way, but the first game won’t arrive until January.

If a subscription sounds like the better option, you can also save 20% on your first box with code BLOGGAME20 at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Christmas board games for family game night?

Pack the Essentials, Cities, Tangram City, Floriferous and Kokopelli are five good picks, and Puzzle Post Mystery is a sixth option that isn’t a board game. All five board games play in 40 minutes or less, and the lowest age rating is 8 and up, for Tangram City.

What is the best Christmas board game for kids?

Tangram City is rated for ages 8 and up and plays 1 to 5 players in 10 to 40 minutes, with everyone placing tiles on their own board at the same time. Cities is a light city-building game rated for ages 10 and up that plays in 30 to 40 minutes. Both suit a table with kids and adults, as long as the youngest player is old enough for the rating.

What is a good Christmas stocking stuffer game?

Puzzle Post Mystery costs $15, the lowest price in the UnboxBoardom shop for a game or puzzle. It’s an escape room in a box: one case with 7 puzzles that give you a code for an online vault. It’s a one-time purchase, and once the case is solved it can’t be played again.

What is a calm Christmas board game for adults?

Floriferous plays 1 to 4 players in 20 to 30 minutes and is rated for ages 14 and up. Over 3 in-game days of 5 turns each, you take one step through a garden and pick up a flower or desire card, and UnboxBoardom’s product page calls it one of the calmer titles in the lineup.

When do I need to order for Christmas?

For a gift subscription, sign up by the end of November and the recipient gets the first game in December, before Christmas. Sign up in December and the first game won’t arrive until January, though the recipient will know it’s coming. For single games, order as early as you can, since 64% of holiday shoppers wait for Thanksgiving weekend.

Which Christmas board games can 2 people play?

All five board games on this list can be played with 2 players: Cities and Kokopelli start at 2, and Tangram City, Floriferous and Pack the Essentials also play with 1. Cities uses 4 rounds instead of 8 in a 2-player game. The board games for couples page lists the ones that work well at 2.

Can I give a gift card instead of picking a game?

Yes. UnboxBoardom gift cards run from $10 to $100 and arrive as a digital code by email. The person who gets it enters the code at checkout, and when it goes toward a subscription, they pick the games each month, not you. And a gift subscription never renews on its own unless the buyer ticks that box at checkout.

Why did Phil Jacobs start UnboxBoardom?

Because the gift his wife went looking for, a board-game-of-the-month subscription, didn’t exist. So Phil (the owner) built it himself, and more than 50,000 boxes have been shipped since. The UnboxBoardom team also hand-picks every game on the list for fun and quality.
