Board Game Halloween Costumes

Halloween is almost upon us, and with the usual spate of ghouls and ghosts comes a whole slew of novel costume ideas. Sure, you could go for some tried-and-true classics, like the sexy nurse, sexy librarian or sexy Dr. Frankenstein, but as a board gamer, you’ve maintained access to some of the most standout material from which to draw inspiration. Here are a few board game-related costumes to try in addition to ones we’ve mentioned in previous years:

Spinners

While most board games have you progress around the board by rolling dice or picking a random card, some, like the game of Life, include a spinner that makes you feel like you’re a contestant on a small-scale gameshow. Everything from the clicky-clacky sound to the speed with which it whirls around gives the impression that something thrilling is about to happen—dreams are about to be made. Bring just a bit of that excitement to any Halloween party you visit by coming dressed as the spinner itself, complete with a knob across your chest for spinning. Alternate costume choices, should you have trouble building this spinner, include laying down a Twister mat and running in a circle a la The Three Stooges. The best parts of costumes, of course, are the audio portions.

Instruction Manual

Tired of being a wallflower? Does the thought of socializing put you in an almost catatonic state of stress? Well, what if there was a way for you to be ignored, but on purpose? This costume is for all of you: Nobody reads the instruction manuals for board games, so the best way to keep others at bay is to arrive decked out like everyone’s least favorite thing. Be sure to get into the real nitty-gritty of the game (might want to tattoo yourself in tiny print to be safe), including the arcane verbiage that will leave partygoers thinking, “Who invited Bore-is over there?” For best results, try the instructions en Español.

Dust

You may be a collector of board games, but your board games are collectors, as well—collectors of dust. Maybe you don’t have as much time to play them anymore. Maybe you’ve moved on to younger, flashier, more wealthy board games offering you the kind of passion you thought had left your life forever. The pieces of your past self have been, both literally and metaphorically, put on the shelf to sit and grow a fine layer of dust. This Halloween costume is sure to induce a bit of ennui into the festivities; that, and it makes for a great time to try out that beige shirt with beige pants look.

Sexy Dust

It’s like the usual dust costume, but this one includes a shorter skirt and a whole lot less shame. Happy Halloween!

BONUS IDEA: CARDBOARD BOX

Of course, to make sure open up the door for you while going trick or treating, you can go as a delivery box. Because, who doesn’t want to open a door for a shipping box that has arrived at your door, presumably with your next favorite board game inside!? We’d recommend our friends at Sticker Mule to really make the costume come to life with custom stickers and other fun designs. They are also good for boring, non-Halloween “real life” application too we suppose…
